This week marks Beef Week 2026 where we’re shining a light on the vital role of farm shops and local butchers in bringing naturally delicious, locally sourced beef to tables across the country.
From the farmers who produce it to the butchers, farm shops and retailers. The focus is on quality, provenance and the people who help ensure our naturally delicious beef stays on our plates.
Across the UK, 71% think that the meat they purchase from the butcher’s counter is good quality, and last year over 3million shoppers purchased meat from a butcher (AHDB/YouGov, those who buy meat from a local butcher, November 2025). In addition, 10% said they purchased their red meat from a farm shop (AHDB/YouGov, consumers who eat meat, November 2025). People purchasing red meat from a butcher claim to do so because they want to buy British (36%) and support local businesses (59%) (AHDB/YouGov, Nov 2025).
Butchers play an important role for shoppers, as three quarters of the survey respondents felt comfortable engaging with someone managing the butchers counter, and more than three quarters like the fact that the butcher will prepare the red meat for them (AHDB/Linney, 2025).
Therefore, you’re not only purchasing quality from your local butcher or farm shop, but also benefitting from their expertise – often passed down through generations – which they’re more than happy to share, so that you can always get the best out of your meat.
We’re blessed in Wales with an abundance of good quality butchers and farm shops that cover all corners of the country. Luckily for you, we’ve also got our own approved ‘Butchers Club’ list, where you can be sure that you’re buying quality, locally sourced, Welsh Beef every time. Take a look at our interactive map and find one that’s near to you – we promise that you won’t be disappointed!
